Living in Los Angeles

Well, not exactly.

One week ago we made the move from Colorado to the Los Angeles area. Home is now the small town of Monrovia, about 20 miles northeast from downtown LA.

We have wanted to make the move to southern California for years. We are pretty ecstatic.

A few experiences so far:

I paid $4.59 a gallon for gas yesterday.

We have been blown away by the kindness of strangers.

Our new next door neighbors had us over for dinner last night for a vegan feast. It was amazing.

We love Donut Friend.

We have been to beaches at Newport Beach and Malibu and loved them both.

We had dinner at Gracias Madre which we fell in love with last summer. It is still amazing in so many ways.

We had deer in our neighborhood. Apparently there are also plenty of skunks, bears and raccoons too.

Our grocery bill is definitely higher.

I have taken the train into downtown LA three times now. Love it. As I interview I am trying to figure out the best way to get to potential jobs.

Downtown LA is incredible. And I haven't even begun to explore it.

More to come.

Thanks for reading!

  1. Congrats on your move and welcome to LA! I love Donut Friend - we live right up the street from it. However, we're in the process of moving OUT of LA to Austin. You absolutely HAVE to go to Kind Kreme/Sage Bistro in Pasadena. Their food is some of the best vegan I've had in LA - or anywhere. They have a few locations, but this is the only one that has pizza, and it's AMAZING. Also, try their jackfruit nachos. Next time you're in downtown check out Shojin, the vegan sushi place. Their sushi rolls even impressed my husband (who isn't vegan - yet). And if you're looking for a fun day trip, Animal Acres Farm Sanctuary is about 45 minutes north of LA. I took a couple friends up their last year for my birthday to visit the animals and have a picnic. Hope you both have a blast here - I know you will :)

  2. Hahaha I saw the prices today too, they were $4.75.
I actually live in Downtown LA but was born and grew up in South Los Angeles. As a kid I was always used to taking the bus to downtown, but it's changed a lot since that time. Not sure if you've been on Broadway st., but I can't stand those giant vases and tables on the street. They picked one of the most busiest streets in downtown to make smaller.
It's great that you've met some nice people and have amiable neighbors. That's pretty hard to have sometimes. Hahah
And some of my favorite vegan places are in Echo Park. It's another area that has changed drastically, but they have some great vegan options. I recommend Masa Pizza. You can just search for "Masa in Echo Park."

  3. Congrats on your move! Having neighbors that actually invite you over for a vegan feast sounds awesome. It would be an improvement where I live if most of my neighbors even said hello.
